Public Housing for Multi-generational Living
Commonwealth Residential
The focus of this Public Housing is to explore multiple generations living under one roof or within close proximity where families have the options to live together, adjacent or in a separate unit from their family members within the same development. The challenge is to design an all-inclusive housing project exploring the varied possibilities of creating accessible housing that knits the social and physical fabric of our urban environment.
Our Site.
The Project Site located in Commonwealth Neighbourhood; colloquially known as chap lak lao in Hokkien (sixteen storey tall flats) is part of Singapore’s first satellite estate, Queenstown. Commonwealth is a historically rich area as it was the model satellite town visited by various dignitaries in the 1960s.
Today, Commonwealth is a matured housing estate with many residents not eager to leave this tranquil and quiet neighbourhood for its central and prominent location including perks of breathtaking sceneries of Orchard and Queenstown from their apartments, for some.
In close proximity to our Project Site includes the first flatted factory built in Singapore, the iconic Queenstown Lutheran Church and also the upgraded Commonwealth Crescent Market and Food Centre that plays host to few famous eateries.
